It seems Desai, who finished sixth on American Idol, has figured out a way to turn his reputation for being a bit of a geek into a performing style that appears to be working for him. Desai, who is touring with the American Idol Top 10, received good reviews for his performance Sunday on opening night of the tour in Portland, Ore. His performance of "Always on My Mind," "Mad," and "My Prerogative" seemed to take the reviewers by surprise. "Anoop Desai, against all odds seemed the performer with the most unique and very successful vision of himself; styling as sort of R-and-B nerd, donning his spectacles at one point, and somehow it worked," wrote Richard Rushfield for the Los Angeles Times. "Where he often seemed tense during the season, he seemed utterly at home on the stage, reminding one of his endearing personality we saw in the competition's early days, with a set that wove together Willie Nelson, Ne Yo and Bobby Brown; like Anoop himself an unlikely combination but he made it make sense," Rushfield wrote. Although Desai quit wearing glasses four or five years ago, he slipped on a pair of thick-rimmed glasses during his set that became a part of a look that seems to emphasizes his nerdiness, in an Elvis Costello kind of way. The Idols performed in the order they were voted off the show so Desai performed after Michael Sarver, Megan Joy, Scott MacIntyre, and Lil Rounds. "Anoop Desai was the first of the Idols to really connect with the crowd," Geoff Kleinman wrote on his Web site, OnPortland. "A wave of flashbulbs fired off as he emerged from the center of the stage signing (sic) Willie Nelson's "Always on My Mind," Kleinman wrote. "Anoop was dressed in a preppy/nerd chic and sported some thick rimmed glasses mid-way through the set," Kleinman wrote. "Musically Anoop isn't the strongest of the Idols -- Lil Rounds vocally eclipsed him -- but Anoop has a charisma and style that fills the stage. He never looked alone up there and seems to have the raw goods to become a star," Kleinman wrote. "His set wasn't earth shattering but it was extremely entertaining." Desai, who wore white jeans, a shirt with the tails hanging out and the sleeves rolled up, a black vest and tie, and a pair of suspenders hanging down around his hips, twittered a week or two ago that he was learning a few dance moves for the tour. Apparently, they worked. Girls and women in the audience screamed as he rolled his hips, and one reviewer commented on Desai's sex appeal. "The odd charmer was Anoop Desai," wrote Scott D. Lewis for The Oregonian, whose review of the concert appeared on Oregonlive.com. "Gangly and geeky, he delivered a power ballad version of 'Always on My Mind,' that would have made poor Willie hit the hookah hard. Desai's set was, in a word, histrionic, but somehow you just wanted to throw personal clothing at him."
